Phone Change: Apple Simplifies Switching from iPhone to Android

Switching from iPhone to Android: Apple plans to make the transition easier in the future. However, this is not possible immediately.

Simplify iPhone to Android Switch in EU

Apple plans to make switching from an iPhone to an Android smartphone more user-friendly in the EU next year. The company announced this as part of implementing requirements of the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which came into effect last week. The law aims to curb some anti-competitive practices of major tech companies.

Currently, there is already a Google app available for switching from iPhone to Android, but it does not transfer some types of data. Apple’s solution is expected to be available by the fall of 2025.

EU’s Call for Competition

At the end of this or the beginning of next year, Apple also plans to enable the transfer of relevant data from one web browser to another on the same device. The DMA also calls for increased competition in web browsers.

The stricter rules for large online platforms have been in effect in the EU since last Thursday. The European Commission has identified 22 services from six companies as so-called “gatekeepers” subject to the new requirements.

The American tech giants Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, Google parent Alphabet, and Meta, the parent company of Facebook, are affected. Additionally, the video app TikTok from the originally Chinese company Bytedance was added to the list.

Among the requirements is that the “gatekeepers” must not favor their own services over offerings from competitors.

transition from iOS to Android is not so simple

So far, switching from iOS to Android is possible, but there are several, sometimes different ways users can transfer their data. One involves Google Drive, the second involves migration apps, which are pre-installed on many new devices, or other paid software options.

The disadvantage of all solutions is that not all data can be transferred. For WhatsApp, iMessage, notes, or payment apps, the applications are powerless. Whether this will change with the solution announced by Apple is unclear.
